Finnish traditional food

Finnish traditional food

Here in Finland, we have different traditional foods, in different areas. We divided Finland into four different parts of this food demonstration.
In southern Finland, there are many traditional foods there. Here are a couple examples of those foods:

Mustamakkara = Black sausage is made of blood and groat.

Ohraryynipuuro is porridge what is made of barley.

Sienisalaatti = Mushroomsalad

Perunalimppu = Potato bread

Mämmi is like pudding, but it’s sturdier. The color of the mämmi is black. Usually this food is eating in Easter.

Runebergin tortut = Runeberg tarts. The name of the tarts comes from a Finnish writer, called Johan Ludvig Runeberg.

Marjapiirakka = Berry Pie. Here is a recipe;
2 eggs
1,5 dl sugar
2 ts vanilla sugar
3 dl wheat flour
1,5 ts baking powder
150 g butter
1 dl milk or fruit juice
Berries on top
What to do?
Whisk eggs and sugar into a foamy mixture. Add wheat flour, baking powder and vanilla sugar. Then add milk or fruit juice and butter. Put dough into a cake tin and sprinkle berries that you want, on top. I usually put there blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. Bake in the oven, at 200 ° C, 25-30 minutes.

Finnish traditional food in western Finland. And again a couple of examples.

Muikkusoppa = Vendace soup, traditional soup, which is made of potatoes, spices, dill, butter or cream and vendaces, of course.

Lapskoussi  is a “jumble” and made of cooked beef and potatoes.

Klimppisoppa = dumpling soup

Leipäjuusto = cheese bread

Lohilaatikko = salmon casserole

Finnish traditional food in eastern Finland :

Blinit = Blinis come from Russia. They are thin, salty, pancakes. Usually with these we eat caviar and sour cream and chopped onion.

Karjalanpaisti = Karelian stew is chopped meat, onion blocks, water and spices. Spices are salt, pepper and bey leafs. Sometimes we also use root vegetables like carrot and potatoes.

Karjalanpiirakka = Karelian pastries are pies, which have a thin rye crust. Inside of that crust is rice porridge.

Mustikkakukko is like blueberry pie
.
Kalakukko = Fish pie. This “pie” has a crusty, rye crust and inside of that crust there is fish, of course.

Muurinpohjaletut = Pan cakes. We use with these usually cream, sugar and jelly.

Perunalaatikko = Potato casserole. In the east you can eat this every time of the year. Elsewhere in Finland we usually eat this at Christmas.

Marjapuuro = Berry pudding

Fourth and the last part of this demonstration is northern Finland. You probably know this part of Finland as Santa Claus's home and of Lapland.

Poronkäristys = Sautéed reindeer. Eat this with lingonberry jam and mashed potatoes.

Lakkahillo = Cloudberry jam
